“The secret to a rich life is to have more beginnings than endings.” David Weinbaum
As the new semester gets underway, I just can't help think about how much I love new beginnings. I really appreciate a fresh start, and I hope that the ELA students feel the same way. I am really excited about the courses we are looking at and hope that others begin to love them as well!
For Grade 9, we are almost coming to a close on our "Write for Success" Unit where we covered real-life situation writing such as letters, emails, resumes, cover letters, and speeches. The resume assignment which includes a cover letter and two letters of reference is due next Wed, the 8th of February. We are just covering the details about speech writing and delivery, and the students will soon be writing a special occasion speech of their choice and performing it in front of the class. Parents are welcome to come watch.
In Grade 10 we have just started ELA B and it is an issue oriented class. We will discuss things like inequalities of gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, physical appearance, class, and so on. In the last unit we will look at how these inequalities affect students and the way the media portrays students.
In Media Studies 20 (the second ELA for Grade 11) we are focusing solely on media and media related issues. I am really excited to teach this class and incorporate a lot of technology into it. We have already made a class wiki-space, which you can check out here. The students will be completing a week long bar graph of how much media they consume in that time period. They will be due next Friday.
In ELA 30 we also have started a new course. I LOVE B 30 English Language Arts! It is so much fun to teach and there are a lot of opportunities for fun assignments. Our first Unit is called "A Sense of Self", and it focuses on the human condition, human relationships and, of course, the individual student. Their first assignment is all about their name and if their name suits them. It should be fun and you should expect some questions from your son/daughter on this topic.
Until next time!

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Winston Churchill
I feel that some students are ready to throw in the metaphoric towel. It almost the end of the semester, and while courses are winding down, students seem to be slowing down as well. Don't give in! Keep working hard! It is now that you can gain or lose those extra marks that will help you as you write finals.
All ELA finals will be written on Monday, January 24th. The schedule is as follows:
- ELA 30 Departmental 9:00 a.m.
- ELA 10 9:00 a.m.
- ELA 20 afternoon
ELA 30
We have now started our novel study "More Joy in Heaven". It is based on a true story and is about a character named Kip Caley who is a 'reformed' convicted bank robber who is released from prison after ten years of his sentence. He becomes a sensation within his city, creating media frenzy. Will he stay out of trouble? Stay tuned to find out...
Students have chapters to read and questions to do each day, according to their reading guides. The character charts will be due on the 18th of January, and we will be having a test on the book on the 19th. The 20th and 21st will be review for the departmental.
ELA 20
We are finishing up our Unit Recollections of Childhood. After the unit, we will be reviewing for the Final.
ELA 10
We have started reading The Miracle Worker. We will be having a short quiz before the final and the students will be completing their questions for each act as we read.
ELA 9
The students had their last writing period today for their short stories. The rough drafts for the stories are due Monday. They will be given a period on Monday to type out their story. It is due on the 18th of Jan.
Our next Unit is called "Write" for Success. We will be focusing on letter and resume writing along with other things that will help the students be ready for the workforce. I am sure they will find it very applicable to real life.
